Gov. Engler:
Looking Back
JENNIFER FINER STAFF WRITER
John Engler is pleased with his
record as governor. The could put
it on the refrigerator like a stu-
dent does with a straight-A re-
port card, he would.
"I'm proud of my full record
over the last 31/2 years," the gov-
ernor said.
When asked what he is most
proud of, the governor rattles off
a list: "Cutting taxes, balancing
the budget, making the environ-
ment cleaner and reforming wel-
fare. I'm proud of a lot."
Gov. Engler, like any other
politician — Democrat or Re-
publican — is used to harsh
criticism. He feels some of the
biggest misconceptions about him
are that he is out-of-touch and his
political agenda has a narrow fo-
cus.
"People have said we're not in
touch with reality and the people .
of Michigan," Gov. Engler said.
"I've met with many people in
this state, which has helped me
be in touch more than any gov-
ernor.
"Another complete misconcep-
r) tion is that we are only interest-
ed in creating jobs and fixing the
budget. We're interested in social
issues, too. We've done other
things in areas like mental
health, public health and social
services that we're not getting
credit for."
One of the things community
leaders like is his willingness to
work with the Jewish communi-
ty.
While in office, the governor
has been not only accessible to
the Jewish community but also
had staff participate in a trip to
Israel. The governor has spoken
to meetings of the Michigan Jew-
ish Conference and the Jewish
Community Council of Metro-
politan Detroit. Earlier this year,
he established a bilateral trade
team to focus on economic devel-
opment between Michigan and
Israel.
"We've tried to reach out to
the Jewish community and
all other communities. It's im-
portant that no one be left out.
The Jewish community has been
tremendously supportive. We've
worked side-by-side addressing
business and social questions
and I hope to see it continue.
I want people to know John
Engler is a governor who is
going to continue to work for
you and every other citizen of
Michigan.' 7
