Some others included Albert
Memmi from the University of
Paris and Egon Friedler, a jour-
nalist from Uruguay.
"Each one addressed a different
area of Jewish practice," Rabbi
Wine said. "Study, celebration,
ethics. They pretty much covered
the spectrum of activity that we
would consider appropriate for the
lifestyle of a Humanistic Jew."
Through a series of workshops
and discussions, delegates to the
conference reaffirmed a 1988
proclamation that "a Jew is a per-
son of Jewish descent or any per-
son who declares himself or herself
to be a Jew and who identifies
with the history, ethical values,
culture, civilization, community
and fate of the Jewish people."
The declaration goes on to em-
phasize action: "Secular Hu-
manistic Jews actively explore
ways to make Jewishness a
meaningful part of their daily ex-
istence and to strengthen their
solidarity with Jews everywhere."
The declaration also promotes
the study of Jewish history and
literature, Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladi-
no and "other Jewish languages."
It stresses the importance of ob-
serving holidays and life-cycle
events, as well as following eth-
ical standards that rest on "such
Humanistic values as personal
autonomy, dignity, justice and re-
sistance to tyranny, exploitation
and oppression."
Rabbi Wine believes the for-
mer Soviet Union is a fertile
ground for the growth of Hu-
manistic Judaism. One Russian
woman, he said, stood up during
the conference and announced,
"The door to Humanistic Judaism
is wide open in Russia. You do not
have to push."

H

undreds of Humanistic
Jews from around the
world gathered in Moscow
recently — 31 years after
the denomination's birth in metro
Detroit.
The International Federation
of Secular Humanistic Jews, held
Sept. 22-25 at Moscow Universi-
ty, attracted 250 people from 15
countries, including six indepen-
dent states of the former Soviet
Union.
More than 80 participants rep-
resented the 26 Humanistic Jew-
ish communities in Belarus,
Georgia, the Ukraine and other
areas in the four-year-old com-
monwealth. These communities
range in size from 20 to 200 peo-
ple. Some Humanistic Jews in
the former Soviet Union traveled
by train for three days to attend
the event.
`The thought that Humanistic
Judaism has emerged in Russia
is very exciting to us," said Sher-
win Wine, rabbi of the Birming-
ham Temple in Farmington Hills
and founder of Humanistic Ju-
daism.
"We wanted to show our sup-
port by holding our Internation-
al Federation meeting there," he
said. "It's very important for them
to know they're not standing
alone."
The conference had two main
goals. In addition to cultivating
ties with Humanistic Jews in
Russia and nearby states, par-
ticipants aimed to answer the
question: "What does it mean to
be Jewish?"
Prominent Humanistic Jews
delivered speeches addressing
this issue. They included Yehu-
da Bauer, a well-known Holo-
caust scholar who co-chaired the
conference with Rabbi Wine.
