munities worldwide with new
groups in the former Soviet
Union. Detroit's sister city is
Vitebsk in Belarus, home of artist
Marc Chagall.
"We want to cultivate these
small groups as the foundation
for permanent communities,"
Rabbi Wine said.
In addition to bringing togeth-
er Humanistic Jews, the confer-
ence united Oak Park resident
Jack Kaufman with a man who
is possibly a long-lost relative.
At a banquet during the con-
ference, Mr. Kaufman was tak-
ing photographs when he ran out
of film. All he needed was a roll
of black and white.
He requested one from a Russ-
ian photojournalist covering the
conference. The Russian man
took Mr. Kaufman's card and re-
turned somewhat later with the
film, a flower and chocolate bar.
"He gives me a hug and he
gives me a kiss and he tells me,
`You and I have the same last
name.' When he looked at my
card and saw Kaufman, he fig-
ured we were family. It's really
an astounding thing," Mr. Kauf-
man says.
The men compared notes.
They traced their ancestries to
Gomel in Belarus.
"Chances are," Mr. Kaufman
says, "we're related." ❑

Rabbi Wine attributes much of
this to recent history.
"After 75 years of communism,
Russian Jewry has been largely
secularized," he said. "Although
Orthodox delegates have arrived
to serve the Jews there, most can-
not be served in an Orthodox
fashion. What they're searching
for is some way for them to be in-
tensely Jewish and secular."
The wide-open halls of Moscow
University were nevertheless an
uncanny place for a Jewish con-
ference, delegates said. For gen-
erations, the school's anti-Semitic
leaders shunned Jews.
No longer under the yoke of
Communist rule, however, the
university has opened its doors.
Although its grand stairways
lead to shabby interiors — testi-
mony to Russia's foundering
economy — the school has wel-
comed a Jewish university head-
quartered on its campus next to
Red Square.
"It was mind-boggling," Rabbi
Wine said. "We looked through
the windows of the lecture halls
and saw the towers of the Krem-
lin. It was eerie. Though it was a
good feeling, it was somewhat
strange. We were affirming Jew-
ish identity where so much op-
pression had occurred."
The conference also served to
match Humanistic Jewish corn-
