In addition to what the stu-
dents have learned in class, there
are other equally important is-
sues, according to Lynn Wert,
Corey's mother.
"Corey has become a part of
the temple community. The pro-
gram has helped him to be com-
fortable and feel a part of things."
Corey celebrated his bar mitz-
vah last year, just like his broth-
ers, and is now looking forward
to his confirmation.
Recently, a 56-year-old woman
from a group home celebrated her
bat mitzvah and two other spe-
cial-needs adults are studying
and preparing for their own b'nai
mitzvah.
Then there are students, like
13-year-old Jeffrey Stone, who
has been in the program for eight
years and is also studying for his
confirmation. He celebrated his
bar mitzvah last year at another
synagogue (and also at Masada
in Israel) by reciting the
Haftorah, Maftir and Ashrei. His
mother, Fay, said her son has a
strong sense of Jewish identity
as a result of the Special Needs
Program.
She praises Ms. Werney as

well, adding, "Rose's expectations
are high, and as a result you get
a high level of achievement."
"There is a strong sense of co-
hesiveness in this program," Ms.
Stone said. "It's lively, it's fun,
and Jeffrey enjoys going."
Ken West's mother agrees.
`They put their heart and soul
into this program. They ask noth-
ing of the parents, they just want
to give," said Marilyn West. "It's
as if they feel we already have
enough to do and this is their gift
to us."
Another benefit of the Special

Needs Program is its reciprocity.
"The kids learn that they can
give back. They are so often the
recipients of services that it's good
to have them learn that they, too,
have something to offer," said
Corey's mother. 0
