season, his second on the team.
Phillips is in his third year with
the Bears.
Kepes suffered a broken ankle
in the win over Dondero and is
out for the season. He was
Berkley's first substitute off the
bench and the team's on-field
spiritual leader.
"We won the battle against
Dondero, but we lost one of our
colonels when Zak was hurt," Ep-
stein said.
Howard is another three-year
player. His father, Dale, who still
plays competitively, is Berkley's
goalie coach.
Selik, who played racquetball
for Detroit at the Jewish Corn-
munity Centers North American
Maccabi Youth Games this sum-
mer in Cleveland, is playing soc-
cer for the first time.
"I guess you could say Marc is
our team expert on restaurants,"
Epstein said with a laugh. "He
can rattle off prices, what kinds
of items places have on their buf-
fets, whatever you need to know."
Somers is an up-and-coming
young player and Gottlieb, one of
the top players on the Berkley ju-
nior varsity squad, was brought
up to the varsity for end-of-sea-
son games and the state tourna-
ment.
Epstein, who also is the girls
varsity soccer coach at Berkley,
is a radio and television sports
broadcaster who provided color
commentary for Detroit Neon in-
door soccer games this summer.
He coached high-school soccer
in California before he and his
wife, Susan, moved to Detroit be-
cause of Susan's job switch. She
is an engineer. ❑
