"Sculpture and Objects" will
open at the Sybaris Gallery and
run through Nov. 26. It will fea-
ture the work of four talented
young artists. The beaded jew-
elry of Austrian artist, Jacque-
line Lillie will be exhibited
during this time as well.
Jerry Bleem and Mark New-
port are recent graduates of the
School of the Art Institute of
Chicago. Both men studied un-
der Joan Livingstone, the na-
tionally recognized artist who
makes sculptures out of indus-
trial felt and epoxy resin. Al-
though their work shares some
common influences and con-
cerns, each makes small-scaled
sculpture that is uniquely his
own.

Botanic forms and the human
body inform the work of Jerry
Bleem. He also draws upon hu-
manity's long history of con-
structing containers for both
practical and symbolic purpos-
es. All of Mr. Bleem's hand-held
sculptures have openings. At
times these allow the interiors
of the works to be readily seen.
Mark Newport's work ques-
tions one of the most basic
notions society has—the dichoto-
mous nature of male and female.
The skin formed by the knotted
waxed linen and the anthropo-
morphic forms of his sculptures
draw forth references to the hu-
man body.
Carrie Seid and Myra Miml-
itsch Gray are Cranbrook Acad-
emy of Art graduates. Like the
work of Bleem and Newport, Ms.
Seid's sculptures are referential
to the human anatomy. The
pieces are constructed from trac-
ing paper and sheet metal.
Ms. Mimlitsch Gray's current
work examines the historical role
of luxury tableware in our soci-
ety. She creates objects that ques-
tion the purpose of preciousness.
Visually and conceptually relat-
ed to packaging and mold-mak-
ing, they refer to the "molding" of
a social class.
