gogue inOak Park.
After assembling a panel of
health-care workers, AIDS ac-
tivists, an AIDS patient and a
rabbi, Ms. Ben Ozer presented
the program last week to about
25 seventh-graders in the after-
noon school.
The two-hour program began
with Lisa Shoemaker, a Michi-
gan woman who contracted
AIDS from the Florida dentist
who also infected five others.
"I am the face of AIDS," she
told the crowd of captivated teen-
agers. "I am living and breath-
ing and healthy-looking, but I am
here to tell you that you can look
healthy and still be infected. You
don't know who has it."
She held their attention as she
spoke of how her life has been af-
fected.
'When I got the virus, I had
a lot of friends but a lot of them
couldn't handle it and were
afraid they would get sick, too,"
she said.

Other panelists, including Jim
Sharp of the Wellness Network
and Ellen Dorshow-Gordon of
Sinai Hospital's infection control
division, conveyed the way the
virus is transmitted and other
medical aspects of the virus.
The students then separated
into four groups to discuss as-
pects of AIDS with the adult
moderators. The children asked
questions about the different
medical treatments available to
combat the disease and methods
to resist sexual peer pressure.
The Michigan Jewish Aids
Coalition (MJAC) is training 25
volunteers who will teach their
curriculum at synagogues and
temples in the Detroit metropol-
itan area Reuben Rotman, chair-
man of MJAC's curriculum
committee, said the program is
suitable for families with chil-
dren in grades eight through 12.
Like the Congregation Beth
Shalom curriculum, this pro-
gram will involve the medical im-
plications as well as the Jewish
response to the disease.
`The real important thing that
I am learning in these sessions
is that we have to have open up
dialogues between the children
and their parents or other adults
they can trust," said Lori Hor-
witz, a volunteer for MJAC.
MJAC will staffAIDS aware-
ness programs at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek, the Jewish
Community Center, Temple
Emanu-El, Adat Shalom Syna-
gogue, Birmingham Temple,
Temple Kol Ami and Temple
Shir Shalom. The programs run
once a week for three weeks and
begin Nov. 7. ❑
