French, Russian, Polish, Hebrew
and several other languages, but
he barely knew English. Howev-
er, within a few years he had be-
come a prolific writer in the lan-
guage, authoring pamphlets and
books, such as The Search for
Peace in the Middle East, The Big
Powers and The Present Crisis.
Mr. Merlin was part of an ef-
fort to create an army of stateless
and Palestinian Jews to fight the
Nazis under the Allied command.
The group successfully lobbied
for the appointment by President
Roosevelt of the War Refugee
Board and tried to bring about
recognition of Jewish Palestine
as a sovereign state.
They created the Hebrew Com-
mittee of National Liberation,
and Mr. Merlin became secre-
tary-general of the group.
In 1948, when Israel got its in-
dependence, Merlin was elected
a member of the first Knesset.
But he soon resigned over differ-
ences with the Herut party lead-
ership. II

German Firms
Aided Iraq?

Bonn (JTA) — German firms and
scientists have helped Iraq build
a new missile factory, according
to the respected German news
magazine Der Spiegel.
According to the magazine, the
German firms bypassed the in-
ternational embargo on military
sales to Iraq, as well as German
laws forbidding military aid over-
seas, by working through mid-
dlemen and so-called "straw"
companies set up to facilitate the
factory's construction.
The magazine reported that
German firms are also involved
in illegal military deals with Iran
and Libya, both countries strong-
ly suspected of offering state sup-
port to terrorist groups.
In Libya, German scientists
are reportedly involved in devel-
oping an underground plant for
the manufacture of poison gas.
The New York Times reported
last year that Libya was building
a second chemical weapons plant
with help from other countries
and that the plant was camou-
flaged as a water project.
The plant was described as sit-
uated underground on a hillside
about 40 miles southeast of the
Libyan capital of Tripoli.
At the time of that report, a
U.S. State Department
spokesman offered congratula-
tions to the German government,
which he said was ensuring "that
German firms do not contribute
to the proliferation of chemical
weapons."
