Work Be gi ns
On Historic
Synagogue

epair and restoration work
has begun on the badly-
amaged roof and anti-
quated drainage system of the
Tempel Synagogue, Poland's
only intact 19th-century syna-
gogue and one of just two syna-
gogues in Cracow still
consecrated for worship.
These are the first physical
steps toward the full restoration
of the synagogue.
The conservation project is
being organized by the New
York-based Jewish Heritage
Council of the World Monu-
ments Fund. It will extend into
the spring of 1997 and it is ex-
pected to cost approximately
$800,000.
Built in 1862 and expanded
in 1893-94, the Tempel Syna-
gogue was once known as the
center of Poland's Progressive
Judaism movement.
Before the Holocaust, syn-
agogue members included
prominent businessmen, in-
dustrialists, bankers, writers
and musicians.
During World War II, the
synagogue was used as a horse
stable and warehouse by occu-
pying German forces and it was
stripped of its furnishings and
ritual objects.
The building survived the
war, as did its original interior
details.

The Hole Truth
About Bagels

nick now, what is a pock-
etbook? How about a
er? Bracelets? Peel?
Peel crunch? Here's a clue: All
these terms deal with bagels.
Yes, bagels. According to the
Bruegger's Bagel Bakery bagel
glossary, a pocketbook is a "mis-
shaped bagel that has an off-
center hole."
A winker "is a bagel that has
been removed from the kettle
too soon ... The center of the
bagel is tightly closed."
Bracelets refers to a bagel
with a center that is too large.
A peel is "the large wooden
board with a long handle that is
used to remove bagels from the
oven."
A peel crunch occurs when a
bagel is torn on the bottom be-
cause the peel hits the bagel in-
correctly.
Bruegger's, the nation's
largest bagel chain, entered the
Detroit market this fall with
stores in Farmington, Grosse
Pointe and Ann Arbor.
