velvet kipot, and they range from
wide-eyed tourists to seasoned
shoppers, like the man in full
Chasidic garb who is in serious
negotiation with an Arab mer-
chant about a large silver pot.
However colorful it is, this is
not a market for the faint-heart-
ed or the innocent. In the hot,
crowed, noisy atmosphere, it
takes skill to discern the rare bar-
gain from the junk and then more
skill to engage in the sharp bar-
gaining that's part of the ritual.
But none of this daunts Karen
Lapidot Even though it's her first
time at the flea market, the Haifa
resident has already bought a
shirt and jeans at good prices. "I
like best that everything's cheap,"
says Karen, 16.
Shlomo Kliker from nearby
Lod, who is shopping with sever-
al friends, also enjoys the bar-
gains, as well as the hunt for
unusiinl items. He's just bought
what looks like an ornamental
wooden window covering, which
he proudly takes out of the pack-
age to show. "It's very old and
special," he says, as he carefully
unwinds the wooden slats.
Maya Weinstein from
Raanana has also just made a
purchase; she bought a pair of
delicate silver earrings. At 15,
she's already a savvy shopper.
"You bargain to get the price a lot
lower," says Maya, who paid only
five shekels (the equivalent of
about $1.50) for the earrings.

On the narrow
streets of the town,
wares of all sorts
spill out everywhere.

"The people doing the selling
want to pressure you to buy fast,"
she says. "But if you show that
you want a lower price, if you say,
`I'll only pay five shekels and
that's all' and start to walk away,
then you'll probably get it for a
lower price."
This style of shopping is not for
everyone. "I hate it!" confesses
one of Maya's friends who has
come along just to be with her
friends. But another friend, Roni
Laserson, relishes the challenge
of bargaining. "It's really fun,"
says Roni, who was born in Israel
and now lives in Miami.
But even more than the bar-
gains, she loves the ambiance.
"Ifs an exciting atmosphere in an
antique city," she says.
Adi Holtzman form Tel Aviv is
just as enthusiastic, and he em-
phasizes that it's not only tourists
who are drawn to the exotic and
colorful Jaffa flea market.
"Israelis enjoy it, too," he says.
"We come for the bargains, or just
to take a walk because it's such
an interesting place to stroll. For
Israelis, not just for tourists, this
is a very special place!" ❑
