tate Reps. Maxine Berman
and David Gubow are the
envy of some candidates on
the campaign trail.
Both enjoy the comfort of a
broadly based Democratic con-
stituency. Both
are longtime in-
cumbents with
favorable repu-
tations as law-
makers. And
while both say
they are taking
the campaign seriously, their
races remain low-key.

people don't realize state repre-
sentatives run every two years.
"They know there is an elec-
tion but many just hear about the(
governor's race or the Senate
race," he said.
"Part of my task
is to make sure
people vote for
the rest of the
ticket."
Rep. Gubow
faces Republican
John Fillicaro in the 35th Dis-
trict, which includes Berkley,
Royal Oak Township, Oak Park,
Huntington Woods, Ferndale and
Pleasant Ridge.
Mr. Fillicaro, a 52-year-
old Huntington Woods
resident who works in
sales and marketing, feels
he has a chance in the
race. Mr. Fillicaro is run-
ning because he "wants to
see the principles he be-
lieves in emphasized."
Those principles in-
chide changing criminal
procedures to focus more
on rehabilitation. He
talks of putting non-vio-
lent criminals to work so
they can "pay back soci-
ety" and he is in favor of
boot camp for some crim-
inals.
Mr. Fillicaro also
talked about the need to
continue addressing the
way in which public
schools operate. He ad-
vocates educating problem stu-
dents separate from others and
"teaching children how to func-
tion in the world."
Rep. Gubow's focus in the Leg- <
islature has been in the areas of
health care and child and family

While nothing in life — and es-
pecially politics — is guaranteed,
Rep. Berman and Rep. Gubow
are in favorable positions to win
their November elections. Still,
they are not taking anything for
granted as their opponents
hope for a victory as well.
"You have to take each
election seriously," said
Rep. Berman, who has
been through six of them.
Rep. Gubow said his
district has not changed
much since he's been in of-
fice and his constituents
are familiar with him.
"I don't go out right be-
fore the election and start
knocking on doors," Rep.
Gubow said. "That's not
my style. In a sense, I'm
constantly campaigning
because I'm always work-
ing with constituents or at-
tending meetings and
functions."
