Victims' Remains
In Crimea

MOSCOW, Sept. 13 (JTA) — The
bones of thousands of Jewish vic-
tims of Nazism are lying exposed
on a hillside in Crimea, and local
authorities say they cannot afford
to bury them.
"It is absolutely dreadful.
Bones and skulls lie on the sur-
face mixed up with dirt and lit-
ter, and nobody even worries
about it," Leonid Geftman, a
Crimean Jewish leader, recent-
ly told the Moscow Times news-
paper.
Mr. Geftman said the bones
date from a massacre in Decem-
ber 1941, when 4,000 people, al-
most all the Jews from Yalta and
nearby, were herded to a site near
Yalta and killed.
The massacre site was then
blown up to hide the evidence,
Mr. Geftman explained. But this
March, heavy rains washed away
the soil on the hillside, revealing
hundreds of thousands of bones.

so stretched that they lack funds

In the interim, said Mr. Geft-
man, the massacre site has be-
come a popular spot for thieves,
who pick through the remains in
search of gold tooth crowns and
other items of value.
Responding to the situation,
an official from the Israeli Em-
bassy in Moscow said he thought
Israel would try to help the Yal-
ta city government. But he did
not provide exact details.

Funds Raised
For Cemetery

Amsterdam (JTA) — The
Sephardic Congregation of Ams-
terdam has established a foun-
dation to raise funds for the
restoration of the old Sephardic
cemetery at Ouderkerk.
The foundation is named for
David Henriques de Castro, who
lived from 1826 to 1898 and au-
thored a book about the cemetery,
which is located southeast of Am-
sterdam.
Henriques de Castro was also
instrumental in unearthing and
repairing many of the 17th- and
18th-century tombstones at the
cemetery, which had sunk into
the surrounding swampy soil.
