The award is named for the late Jewish leader, Fred
Butzel, whose compassion and service to the community
and city of Detroit were legendary.

The 1994 recipient is David Mondry, a former chairman
of the Allied Jewish Campaign and guiding force behind
Detroit's first Operation Exodus campaign to rescue and
resettle Soviet Jewry.

Deeply touched by a visit to Poland with the United
Jewish Appeal, Mr. Mondry later wrote in The Jewish
News: "Recalling our terrible losses in the Holocaust,
each of us must ask the question, what would I do and
what would I give to save so many lives? We have the
opportunity to do that for Soviet Jewry."

Mr. Mondry's tireless efforts as chairman of Operation Exodus led to one of the most outstanding community
achievements in the country: nearly $30 million to date.

After many years of volunteer leadership of the Allied Jewish Campaign, Mt Mondry
became chairman in 1981. He served on the Jewish Federation Board of Gover-
nors and the boards of the Jewish Home for Aged, Sinai Hospital and the Detroit
Service Group.

A longtime supporter of Jewish education and Israel causes, including the Ameri-
can Friends of Hebrew University Mr. Mondry also assisted with fund raising to
create the Holocaust Memorial Center.

Witb help from
Operation Exodus, this
family was among the
500,000 immigrants
from the former Soviet
Union who came home to
Israel in the past five years.
