WHEN SMOKE GETS IN CHILDREN'S EARS

People are becoming increasingly aware
of the hazards of "secondary smoke." Ac-
cording to numerous studies, a person need
only endure exposure to environmental to-
bacco smoke to increase his or her sus-
ceptibility to acute respiratory illnesses.
Beyond that, it has recently come to light
that children exposed to environmental
smoke are more likely to develop middle-
ear effusions. These are buildups of fluid in
the middle ear. Evidence suggests that pas-
sive smoke not only helps create this con-
dition, but it causes it to last longer. The
reason behind this is that environmental cig-
arette smoke irritates the Eustachian tubes,
which are the narrow channels that connect
the ear and throat. The tubes become
swollen and blocked. Fluid, then, builds up
in the tubes and they become infected.

If you have any questions about this
topic, or if you or a loved one are experi-
encing hearing loss, please come visit us
today at CRUZ HEARING AID SERVICE. We
can give you your own private hearing eval-
uation, which will determine the type of hear-
ing aid that will best suit your needs. We also
have many accessories in stock, such as
batteries and battery testers. Assistive lis-
tening devices are also available in our of-
fice and we feature such items as telephone
amplifiers and infra-red systems. Please call
us to schedule an appointment. We are con-
veniently located at 18899 W. 12 Mlle Rd.,
in Lathrup Village, and our phone number
is 424-8450.
P.S. Middle-ear effusions are a primary
cause of childhood hearing loss.
