and he often encountered snide
remarks.
"My friends were all really lib-
erated, but strangers gave me
weird looks. When you go out
with your kids, people look at you
like you're a kidnapper," Mr.
Davis said.
Psychologists have pointed out
that becoming an involved father
takes the kind of man who is bold
and secure because he is battling
traditional society. Most men
who choose to be their child's pri-
mary caregiver face some
strange looks from the neigh-
bors. Men have reported be-
ing asked by women if they
are "babysitting for the day"
and being treated by pediatri-
cians as if they were simply
message-carriers to their
spouses, things not often ex-
perienced by mothers.
Mr. Davis believes when he
went back to working part-
time that he was much more
helpful than before he was a
Mr. Mom. Initially when he
worked, he would come home

and ignore family involvement;
he just let his wife handle things.
But when he went back to work
after his Mr. Mom stint, he would
come home, help his wife and
play with his children.
"I put a lot more investment
into my kids than I would have
otherwise," Mr. Davis said. And
he offers the following advice to
other men: "Don't be afraid to be
around your kids and be involved
with their care; it's a good
deal." ❑
