Miriam Meckler Scholarship for
Piano allows recipients to con-
tinue schooling for a year.
"My mother was associated
with the club for many years," the
pianist explained. "She really
cared a lot about young artists,
and the group supports young
artists by giving scholarships and
having concerts.
"When I was a young artist,
they supported me. They helped
me financially, and they pre-
sented me in a number of con-
certs through the years. I just feel
an enormous pride in that whole
group. It's like a family.
"Every year I get a letter from
the person who receives our schol-
arship. They all tell me about
what they're doing and how
they're doing. It really makes me
happy to have the young ones
continuing their work."
In keeping with her encour-
agement of young artists, the for-
mer Detroiter recently completed
The Ruth Laredo Becoming a
Musician Book, a guide for as-
piring pianists drawn from per-
sonal experiences.
A columnist for Keyboard Clas-
sics magazine, she used a num-
ber of her articles as the basis of
some of the chapters in the book,
which is now available in music
stores.
"My ambitions had td do with
music and not a career," revealed
the pianist, who soon will be re-
turning to Carnegie Hall to per-
form with Skitch Henderson and
the New York Pops.
`The career is something that
blossoms or grows out of what
kind of musician a person is. I do
not set my sights on outside
things like concerts. A career is
a wonderful thing for a caring
musician, but that musician has
to think about what goes on in-
side, not outside." II]
