What started out as the "in" place of metropolitan Detroit has not only retained that stature, but also gathered an ongoing mo- mentum ... yet to reach its peak ... Customers coming back again and again is what the restaurant business in particular is all about ... The beautiful Avenue Diner has achieved this coveted goal. A TOUCHING bonus was added to the recent very fine ap- pearance of pianist David Syme in the Rainbow Show Room at Arriva Ristorante, E. 12 Mile Road, between Mound and Van Dyke. He asked dad, Rabbi M. Robert Syme, to come up from the audience and help him in his next tune. It was a wonderful tribute to David's mother and prayer for Sonia Syme, at Botsford Gener- al Hospital, as he sang "Yiddishe Mama" and was joined in a duet by Rabbi Syme ... There were few dry eyes in the audience. David seems to get better • every time I see him ... His reper- toire is vast and Dave's humble stage presence most refreshing ... Few star entertainers will ac- knowledge a dear friend's birth- day by singing "Happy Birthday" to them as he did for Shirley Fink, who, with hubby Nate, helped him in his career ...At the same table, Joy and Jack Morof feted anniversary number 45 ... In the crowd of 200, Irving Lip- sky celebrated birthday number 80 with wife Rita sending pieces of cake; Harriet and Dan Dunsky with anniversary number 35 ... the Rev. James Lyons observed his 57th birthday with wife, Crissy, while at the same table, his mother-in-law, Esther Ben- ton, enjoyed birthday number 76. We had a fun table with Rab- bi Syme telling jokes, Clara and Fred Silber (57th anniversary in October), Della French, Bill Hon- eycombe, Gretchen and Howard Gourwitz, Myron and Mickey Shanker. Few pianists play George Gershwin's melodies better than David ... Bet he'd be terrific on a medley of composers like Cole Porter, Harry Warren, Sammy Kahn, etc. Dave's strong, nimble fingers are accompanied by closed eyes as he puts so much feeling into his stylings ... It's like he throws himself into another world, and the enjoyment oozes out over his audience. The way David rolls off music from audience requests is re- markable as the titles are tossed at him by his arranger.
