JEWISH ENSEMBLE THEATRE

er ... Inside are adornments that
boggle the eyes, with frosted glass
dividers between colorfully-pat-
terned booths, stainless and
chrome open kitchen, beautiful
art deco chandeliers and so much
more glittering elegance that
makes this such a highly styled
thing of beauty done in good taste
... Avenue Diner is surely one of
greater Detroit's most stunning
places to eat and drink.
A full menu is served Monday
through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to
10 p.m.; and Friday and Satur-
day, 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. ... Sun-
day has a champagne brunch,
10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The former Juke Box nitery lo-
cale that made so many young
folks happy has been trans-
formed into what is now a fa-
vorite dining spot for people of all
ages, with white linen tablecloths
and napkins on tables providing
a warm look of intimacy in its el-
egance.
This is a diner in name only ...
Atlanta has Buckhead Diner,
San Francisco its stunning Fog

Avenue Diner
captures a fresh
realism in exquisite
atmosphere.

City Diner ... Avenue Diner here
is another luxurious environment
that captures a fresh realism in
exquisite atmosphere, superior
food presentation and excellent
menu selection.
What started out as the "in"
place of metropolitan Detroit has
not only retained that stature,
but also gathered an ongoing mo-
mentum ... yet to reach its peak
... Customers coming back again
and again is what the restaurant
business in particular is all about
... The beautiful Avenue Diner
has achieved this coveted goal.
A TOUCHING bonus was
added to the recent very fine ap-
pearance of pianist David Syme
in the Rainbow Show Room at
Arriva Ristorante, E. 12 Mile
Road, between Mound and Van
Dyke.
He asked dad, Rabbi M.
Robert Syme, to come up from
the audience and help him in his
next tune.
It was a wonderful tribute to
David's mother and prayer for
Sonia Syme, at Botsford Gener-
al Hospital, as he sang "Yiddishe
Mama" and was joined in a duet
by Rabbi Syme ... There were
few dry eyes in the audience.
David seems to get better
• every time I see him ... His reper-
toire is vast and Dave's humble
stage presence most refreshing
... Few star entertainers will ac-
knowledge a dear friend's birth-
day by singing "Happy Birthday"
to them as he did for Shirley
Fink, who, with hubby Nate,

helped him in his career ...At the
same table, Joy and Jack Morof
feted anniversary number 45 ...
In the crowd of 200, Irving Lip-
sky celebrated birthday number
80 with wife Rita sending pieces
of cake; Harriet and Dan Dunsky
with anniversary number 35 ...
the Rev. James Lyons observed
his 57th birthday with wife,
Crissy, while at the same table,
his mother-in-law, Esther Ben-
ton, enjoyed birthday number 76.
We had a fun table with Rab-
bi Syme telling jokes, Clara and
Fred Silber (57th anniversary in
October), Della French, Bill Hon-
eycombe, Gretchen and Howard
Gourwitz, Myron and Mickey
Shanker.
Few pianists play George
Gershwin's melodies better than
David ... Bet he'd be terrific on a
medley of composers like Cole
Porter, Harry Warren, Sammy
Kahn, etc.
Dave's strong, nimble fingers
are accompanied by closed eyes
as he puts so much feeling into
his stylings ... It's like he throws
himself into another world, and
the enjoyment oozes out over his
audience.
The way David rolls off music
from audience requests is re-
markable as the titles are tossed
at him by his arranger.
Sam Locricchio, co-owner at
Arrive, and wife Joanne, have an-
other fine lineup on tap for the
Rainbow Room ... Johnny 'Pru-
den Tribute to Stan Kenton, fea-
turing the four Freshmen, Oct.
3-8; Buddy Greco with Leslie An-
ders, Oct. 20-22 and 27-29; the
Gaylords, Nov. 4 and 5; comedi-
an Pat Cooper, Nov. 10-12; jazz
vocalist Chris Connor, Nov. 17-
19.
DISA 'N DATA ... Still an-
other honor goes to Linda
Solomon, local photojournalist ...
She'll receive an award, Oct. 3,
at the Whitney, as Michigan
Artist of The Year by Michigan
Artrain, the nation's only travel-
ing museum ... What does a for-
mer restaurateur do after leaving
the dining game? ... In the case
of Benjie Pearlman, he becomes
an excellent clay artist ... Ben-
jie's opening exhibit reception at
Galerie International on Tele-
graph (just south of Long Lake
Road) is tonight, Sept. 30, 6-10 ...
Grand prize was a 1994 Mer-
cedes, but Sidney and Barbara
cedes,
Geller happily took the Ultimate
New York Experience he won at
a Metropolitan Opera Co. raffle
... Opening night at the Met.,
Sept. 26, with Placido Domingo
in Il Tabarro, and Luciano
Pavarotti in Pagliacci, plus trans-
portation and accommodations
at the Rihga Royal Hotel ...
Yes, that was Howard and Jo
Rosen "buying a home" on a re-
cent "Good Morning, America"
segment of what folks should look
for when making the purchase
... No, being on national TV
hasn't changed them. 111
