The pictures were later shelved,
but Guccione insists it was not
because of any pressure from the
Jewish community."
"We learned of the affiliation
of the girls only after the photos
were taken," Mr. Guccione told
Esquire. "At that time, out of re-
spect for Rabbi Schneerson„ we
decided not to run the photos."

Boredom
Of Deniers
Christopher Hitchens tags along
with the oddest people to the
most incongruous of places — in-
congruous, that is, for them.
In The Nation, Mr. Hitchens,
one of the finest British icono-
clasts residing on these shores,
tells that when he heard that
Holocaust debunker, Professor
Robert Faurisson, was coming
"through Washington to visit the
Holocaust Museum, I hastened
along to meet him."
Mr. Hitchens never does speci-
fy how Professor Faurisson react-
ed to the museum nor, presumably,
how he repudiated its four floors of
staggering exhibits and archives
with a dismissive sweep of his arm
or with an amused chuckle at the
accumulation of "fabrications." (Nor
does he say just where Mr. Fau-
risson is a professor or what he
teaches.)
But he does let us eavesdrop
on the questions that he and the
professor shot at each other:
Asked the journalist of the pro-
fessor: Was it not true that the
National Socialist Party's pro-
paganda specifically and openly
cited Jews as the root of all rot
and evil? Once the war began,
were the Jews of western Europe
not shipped eastward against
their will? If these people were
not put to death, why did so few
of them return?"
And the journalist decides that
there was "something — I scarce-
ly know what to call it — some-
thing distant about Faurisson's
response. He does not consent, as
I did with his questions, to an-
swer mine cumulatively and in
order. He remains polite and he
continues to discuss, but he has
become bored — that's it, bored."
Which may in the end be the
scariest thing about this partic-
ular Holocaust denier. At least
passion, indignation, fury indi-
cate engagement and concern for
the truth. Boredom suggests
anomie, aloofness, a gap between
commitment and the repartee in
which one is involved. Boredom
implies a schizoid distance from
the moment, which may also sug-
gest a schizoid distance from life.
Which may explain how one
becomes a Holocaust denier, to
begin with. fl!
