in mortal combat today," he told
the coalition. "There are at-
tempts to portray them as the
rich vs. the poor, men vs.
women, blacks vs. whites, Chris-
tians vs. Jews. But ... the armies
are really those of militant secu-
larism and are against those of
us who have welcomed God into
the public sector."
He said the Christian Coali-
tion is "very aggrieved" by
mounting criticism of its politi-
cal role: "When Jews attack the
Christian right, we're really see-
ing attacks by people whose first
priority is secularism, not Ju-
daism."

Michael Berenbaum:
Praised Roth's appontment.
T
he U.S. Holocaust Memo-
rial Council, which is re-
sponsible for Washington's
enormously successful
Holocaust Museum, will get a
new member.
Last week, President Clinton
announced he is nominating
John Roth, a professor of philos-
ophy at Claremont McKenna
College and a Holocaust scholar,
to the council.
Calling Mr. Roth, who has
written 21 books, a "superb schol-
ar," Michael Berenbaum, the
museum's director of special pro-
jects, said the appointment "rep-
resents an ongoing attempt to
reinvigorate the council's acade-
mic quality."
Holocaust scholars have crit-
icized the fact that many council
appointees have political cre-
dentials, but no scholarly ones.
• The president, said Mr. Beren-
baum, has been trying to reverse
that trend.
