Mr. Zide used his time at ICM
to establish a deeper under-
standing of the industry. He
made new contacts and rein-
forced the old. But, as an under-
ling to Mr. Newman, he wasn't
entirely happy.
Last December, Mr. Zide de-
cided to quit his job. He took a bit
more than a month off, then
dubbed himself a "personal man-
ager." For a short time, he
worked out of his apartment. He
called all his contacts and alert-
ed them to his change of status.
"I was scared out of my mind
at first. But if I don't believe in
myself, no one else will," he says.
In early spring, a small com-
pany called Ogdenhouse Enter-
tainment recruited him as
president of its operations. He's
been busy ever since.
"A lot of people candy-coat
things. When I read a script and
don't like it, I tell people," he says.
"I think my writers respect me
a lot more for that. rm definitely
not a yes-man."

Warren Zide

Mr. Zide's childlike taste in
movies belies his no-nonsense de-
meanor. Among his favorite
flicks: Willy Wonka And the
Chocolate Factory and Back To
the Future. He enjoys high-con-
cept comedies. Violence isn't his
gig-
Like so many of his L.A. com-
panions who share rags-to-rich-
es stories, Mr. Zide says his life
changed dramatically with suc-
cess. He traded in his 1986 Es-
cort for an Infinity. He plans to
buy a house.
But some things about Mr.
Zide's life hold steady. He still
pumps iron at Gold's Gym at 6:30
every morning. His penchant for
Sega video games won't quit, and
26 scripts comprise his weekly
reading diet.
Persistence will be his watch-
word, always.
"From the start, my friends
were in the mail room or they
were readers at studios doing cov-
erage on scripts. And all of us are
moving up. Now, my mail room
friends are agents in agencies.
Executives at studios.
"The way to do it is just to do
it. If entertainment is really what
you want to be doing, you've just
got to suck it up, move out to L.A.
and don't listen to what anyone
else tells you. Because if you do,
you might end up very unhappy
when you're 45 years old."
