Aside from the fact that this freshman lawmaker never held an elected office, his early views on Israel were not especially pop- ular among Jews. During his campaign two years ago, Mr. Knollenberg said he would approve arm sales to Arab nations in certain cases. He also agreed with former Presi- dent George Bush's decision to postpone loan PO guarantees to Is- S- r ael to resettle Soviet Jews. His reason: if the ul- timate goal is peace in the Mid- dle East, Israel should be asked to stop building settlements in the administered territories. "I had the sense that I was an unknown in the Jewish commu- nity," said Mr. Knollenberg, who breezed by Jewish opponents Sen. David Honigman and Judge Alice Gilbert, who were engaged in an ugly 1992 primary. "I've Cr Equal Housing Lender. ©1994 Countrywide Funding Corporation. "Nothing about the trip made me change my mind about Is- rael," Mr. Knollenberg said. "It reinforced my feelings on Israel's importance and the significance of maintaining good relations with Israel." Now, Mr. Knollenberg is back on the campaign trail, hoping to extend his job in Washington. His Democratic opposition, Mike Breshgold, a 41-year-old district Gales manager for a phar- maceutical company, would like to see Mr. Knol- lenberg become a one-term law- maker. Both candi- dates ran unop- posed in the primary. Although the 11th District tends to vote Republican, Mr. Breshgold feels he has a good chance of winning. The 11th District includes Bloomfield Hills, West Bloom- field, Keego Harbor, Sylvan Lake, Birmingham, Farmington, Farm- ington Hills, Milford, most of Southfield, Livonia, Redford, Novi, Northville, White Lake, South Lyon and Highland. Mr. Breshgold said he hopes to oust his opponent by concentrat- ing the campaign in swing vote areas like West Bloomfield, where voters tend to be more moderate. Some of Mr. Breshgold's cam- 994 Joseph Knollenberg made attempts to become more familiar with the community and build an understanding. I think we achieved that by the general election (in 1992)." A lot has changed since his ear- ly campaign days. Once in office, Mr. Knollenberg consistently voted in favor of for- eign aid to Israel. Last January, Mr. Knollenberg went on a trip to the Jewish state subsidized by the Jewish Community Council, Flint Jewish Federation and pri- vate donors. He spoke with Is- raeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin about U.S. involvement in the peace process and met with Mike Breshgold paign assistance comes from his three children: Ari, Elana and Joshua, who ask classmates at Hillel Day School to tell their par- ents to vote for Mike Breshgold.
