Rabbi Glaser

New York (JTA) — Funeral ser-
vices were held at Congregation
Rodeph Shalom here for Rabbi
Joseph Glaser, 69, a leader of the
Reform movement who died Sept.
21.
Rabbi Glaser was the emeri-
tus executive vice president of the
Reform movement's rabbinic or-
ganization, the Central Confer-
ence of American Rabbis, a post
he held since 1971.
He also had served in posts
with the movement's teaching
arm, the Hebrew Union College-
Jewish Institute of Religion,
where he had been a registrar
and teacher at the Los Angeles
branch.
Rabbi Glaser was on the exec-

utive committees of the Union of
American Hebrew Congrega-
tions, the Reform Movement's
congregational arm, and the Syn-
agogue Council of America.
He was also a member of the
Conference of Presidents of Ma-
jor American Jewish Organiza-
tions, for many years heading its
Scopes Committee, which deter-
mines the conference's tasks and
limitations.
Rabbi Glaser also was a found-
ing board member of the Ameri-
can Jewish World Service, a hu-
manitarian organization which
helps impoverished non-Jews im-
prove their living standards.
Rabbi Glaser also served oth-
er humanitarian groups, includ-
ing those dealing with California
migrant workers, American In-
dians, Tibetan exiles and Is-
raelis.❑

We take pride in providing the
dignity, sanctity and simplicity of
Jewish Funeral services and complete
personal and professional care at a
reasonable cost.
If you choose to follow the Jewish
tradition of a graveside or cemetery
chapel service, you don't have to pay
the extra costs associated with a large
funeral home.

Expansion For
Frank House

Amsterdam (JTA) — Nine hous-
es adjoining the Anne Frank
House in Amsterdam have been
appropriated by the Amsterdam
municipality and will be demol-
ished to make room for a large-
scale expansion of the house that
contains the "Secret Annex."
The office building in whose
rear-facing portion the Franks,
the van Daans and dentist Dus-
sel were hidden from the Nazis
for two years has become too
cramped to accommodate the
more than 600,000 visitors who
have been visiting it annually.
Among the houses to be de-
molished is a student hostel con-
taining 88 student apartments.
The municipality will offer in-
habitants of the houses to be
razed alternative lodgings and
the equivalent of $1,500 for mov-
ing costs.
The municipality has made the
equivalent of $1.5 million avail-
able for the endeavor.
Earlier, the municipality made
some $200,000 available to clean
the grounds behind the Anne
Frank House so that the chest-
nut tree that Anne mentions in
her diary could be saved.
Anne, who named her diary
"Kitty," died at Bergen-Belsen in
March 1945, at the age of 15, two
months before the liberation of
Holland. Of the eight persons
who hid in the "Secret Annex,"
only Anne's father, Otto Frank,
returned from the death camps.
