Staff and clients of Alyn, a hospital serving severely disabled children in Israel,

in asserting authorship to a song,
which is meanwhile being open-
ly published and sold by others,
constitutes fatal acquiescence..."
Passport to Jewish Music also
features chapters on "Russian
Nationalism and Jewish Music,"
"Judeo-Spanish Moroccan Songs"
and "Song and the Modern
Return to Zion." It considers clas-
sical composers including Arnold
Schoenberg and Leonard Bern-
stein, who "proved that a Jew can
`: perform a fine St. Matthew's Pas-
sion by Bach, and also present a
rendition of Bloch's Sabbath Sa-
cred Service to the acclaim of non-
Jews."
Ms. Heskes is a music his-
torian whose articles have ap-
peared in the Encyclopedia
Judaica, Musical Theater in
America, and Handbook of Holo-
caust Literature. Her books
include The Music of Abraham
Goldfaden and The Golden Age
of Cantors.
I
wo-year-old Joshua had a
problem with physical co-
ordination. His behavior
could best be described as
troubled. The doctor's diagnosis:
"minimal cerebral dysfunction."
Joshua had autism.
In The Journey with
Joshua (Bristol, Rhein and Eng-
lander), Joshua's mother Naomi
Meyer (a pseudonym) tells of her
unusual decision to work with
her son on her own. Though an
experienced early childhood ed-
ucator, she could not begin to
fathom what she, and her family,
would face as a result of her
decision.
Instead of supporting her,
many educators chided Mrs.
Meyer for her decision.
The prevailing view among
professionals here (in Israel), just
as in the States, was that for a
parent to teach his child was
harmful to their relationship.
"You should be a mother to him,"
I was told ... Though I was pretty
sure I was doing the right thing,
there were moments of doubt.
Failing to adhere to accepted
patterns can be lonely and
frightening, especially when I
desperately wanted and needed
approval.
But with patience and love,
and using positive reinforcement
and a system of rewards, Mrs.
Meyer teaches Joshua to control
his annoying habits, participate
in family responsibilities, play
games, read and bake challah:
The first time around I had
him watch me, allowing him to
assist with simple tasks such as
preparing the baking pans, di-
viding up with dough, rolling it
out, brushing on the yolk. The sec-
ond time I let him work virtually
unassisted, but was on hand to
supervise. He did remarkably
well. The third time he was on his
own, with instructions to call me
if ran into difficulty. He needed
me only once. An uninformed
observer might have thought their
shapes rather unusual, but in our
eyes, the challot were perfectly
beautiful. And how enormously
pleased Joshua was! There is
something infinitely satisfying
about baking bread, and he
felt it.

Now finding out — even if you
don't know a single letter of the
Hebrew alphabet — is as easy as
opening Webster's New World
Hebrew Dictionary (Mac-
millan).
Written by Hayim Baltsan, ed-
itor emeritus of the Israeli news
agency ITINI and a linguistic
