Mr. Siegel visited the
Shkedis four years ago after re-
ceiving a Jerusalem Post clip
about their riding program.
"Miraculous stuff is happen-
ing there," he says. "It's aston-
ishing. People who were floppy
can sit up straight; people who
couldn't walk can walk. Learn-
ing disabled can now learn
better, and someone who never
spoke now speaks.
'This is about getting people
what they deserve to have," he
adds. "They are entitled to it.
That's what tzedakah is ... our
job is to match them up to what
benefits them."
Mr. Siegel is so taken with
hippo therapy and therapeutic
riding that at the recent Coali-
tion for the Advancement of
Jewish Education (CAJE) an-
nual conference in Blooming-
ton, Ind., he arranged for a
nearby therapeutic riding cen-
ter to do a demonstration for the
educators.
"This is mainstream, not
alternative stuff," he explains.
"To not offer it (therapeutic
riding and hippo therapy) to
individuals who need it is like
saying to a student today that
he can't have a computer. It's
1994. No one believes anymore
that doctors have all the
answers." 0

Tel Aviv (JTA) — As part of last
week's events marking the first
anniversary of the signing of the
Palestinian self-rule accord in
Washington, Israeli President
Ezer Weizman hosted some 400
Israeli and Arab intellectuals at
a garden party at the presiden-
tial residence.
Among the Israeli writers,
artists, musicians and intellec-
tuals attending the ceremony
were writers Amos Oz and A.B.
Yehoshua a,s well as singer Ofra
Haza.
Many of the Israelis were as-
sociated with the Peace Now
movement, and had frequently
met with Palestinian leaders
when such meetings were still of-
ficially banned.
Among the Arab guests —
which included Moroccans,
Tunisians, Egyptians, Sudanese
and Syrians — many were expa-
triates who are currently living
and working in Europe or the
United States.
