and more interaction between Is-
rael and Diaspora Jews.
"People here think that if Is-
rael is not in constant crisis, then
they don't need our money," he
says. "And people there don't
want a charitable relationship
anymore. They're saying come
live in Israel or connect with us
in other ways."
How to "connect in other ways"
became clearer to Mr. Aronson as
- he worked closely with the Jew-
ish Agency and Joint Distribu-
tion Committee during his
sabbatical.
Reflecting on the experience,
he explains that Israel, though
richer, still has social problems:
the elderly, domestic violence,
delinquent children. The need for
welfare programs — outside of
the government's scope — con-
tinues, he says.
"I came away (from work with
the Jewish Agency and JDC)
with a tremendous amount of ex-
citement and optimism about the
future of our relationship. But we
need to interpret it better both to
Israelis and Americans. Really,
our dollars are not being used as
hand-out dollars to Israeli soci-
ety. That's an impression people
have that simply isn't true," he
says.
American charity plays a vital
social role where government
cannot, Mr. Aronson says, in
religious continuity, Ethiopian

acculturation, even the handi-
capped. In fact, the Israeli gov-
ernment often requests services
and guidance, particularly from
the JDC.
"It's a partnering," Mr. Aron-
son says.
American charitable dollars
also go to resettle Jews from the
former Soviet Union and other
areas deemed dangerous. But, be-
yond money, Israel needs U.S.
help in spearheading its own vol-
untary campaigns — an espe-
cially difficult feat amid a highly
taxed populace, Mr. Aronson
says.
Sharing expertise is essential,
he continues. Just as Israel can
help promote Judaism by serv-
ing as a central address and place
of Jewish identity, so too can Di-
aspora Jews contribute to Israel's
economic welfare and cultural
continuity. Mr. Aronson de-
scribed a fledgling professional
relationship between Detroit and
an area in Central Galilee. He
recommended more student ex-
changes and more tourism.
"Let's learn from each other —
but as equals," he says. "If we cir-
cle our wagons, we will all be the
losers." ❑
