BLOOD PRESSURE page 41
Segal of the Weizmann Institute
of Science's Department of Neu-
robiology.
Working with a hypertensive
strain of rats, the Institute team
separated the hypothalamus re-
gion of the brain into two sub-
regions: rostal (front) and caudal
(back). Tissue from these sub-
regions was implanted into the
brains of normal adult rats; those
receiving rostal tissue showed a
50 percent elevation in systolic
blood pressure; blood pressure of
animals grafted with caudal tis-
sue did not increase significant-
ly.
Having linked the rostral sub-
region to hypertension, the re-
searchers also found a 77 percent
reduction in the number of spe-
cific brain cells in this region —
known as paraventricular par-
vicellular cells — among the
group receiving rostral tissue.
They ascribe this to the release
of toxic materials by the brain
graft, which triggers a selective
activation of programmed cell
death in the recipient rats.
"Our model," the scientists
write, "may shed light on factors
that take part in the process of
neural degeneration." 1=1

those people strong enough to get
to the hospital can survive, but
the weakest die in their huts or
out in the open.
