More Americans are eating turkey — close to 18 pounds per person per year, according to the U.S. De- partment of Agriculture. Nationally, Americans con- sume 68 million turkeys during Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is becoming more socially ac- ceptable for companies to give a turkey instead of alcohol or cash to employees or valued clients. "Turkeys are big, but they don't cost a lot," says Mr. Loewen- stein. "And they give the people you send them to something they can take home and share with their family. The turkey serves as the centerpiece of a holiday meal." During quieter times, Loewen- stein Poultry also owns and runs Michigan Cold Storage in Taylor and acts as a food broker for two Fortune 500 food companies, as well as other food manufacturers and poultry processors. The 1994 holiday season al- ready is stacking up to be a good one in what Mr. Loewenstein says is largely a recession-proof business. Companies give gift turkeys in both good and bad eco- nomic times, he says. Loewenstein Poultry plans to expand, branching out further into the Midwest, Pennsylvania and New England and Canada in the coming years. The family would like to see the company prosper into its sec- ond century with Loewensteins still at the helm. "I would love to see my son get in the business," says Ms. Loewenstein Roberts. "I've had such a wonderful experience."
