you that, according to Jewish Law, a civil divorce is incom-
plete without receiving a Get. You may not remarry without
one. To obtain a Get call any Conservative Rabbi or

Halachah, Jewish law, against
keeping animals as pets. Many
rabbis, however, forbid Jews from
owning non-kosher animals
raised for food, even if it is in-
tended for sale to gentiles
only. Thus Jews are forbid-
den from raising pigs,
shrimp, frogs, etc., for
the food market, but
not from breeding
such animals as
horses, dogs and
parakeets as
work animals or
pets.
There is no prohi-
bition against keeping
non-kosher animal food,
so long as it is kept separate
from food for human consump-
tion.
The one exception to keeping
animal food relates to Pesach.
Then, the problem is not whether
the pet food is kosher but
whether it contains chametz
(leaven).
Most American pet food is
made from grain or has grain ad-
ditives — items forbidden on Pe-
sach. Even though the food is to
be eaten by animals only, a Jew
may not own chametz in any
form during Pesach. For the
week of the holiday, Fido or
Fluffy will have to eat food with-
out any grain or grain deriva-
tives.
