Newspaper
Is Unrelenting

Despite Louis Farrakhan's in-
sistence that he seeks a con-
structive dialogue with Jews, the
recent issue of The Final Call, the
Nation of Islam's newspaper, mir-
rors the Nation's obsession with
Jews:
* Columnist Abdul Allah
Muhammad cites Minoo South-
gate's review in New York's Jew-
ish Press of Thomas Sowell's new
book, Race and Culture: A World
View. He was especially dis-
turbed that she had "bewail[ed]
the fact that Minister Farrakhan,
Leonard Jeffries, Jesse Jackson
and Al Sharpton were invited by
the NAACP to the [national black
leadership] summit ... while Sow-
ell was ignored because, she says,
he is seen as `... a sellout and an
Uncle Tom who had been re-
warded by whites for spreading
ideas that absolve them of cul-
pability for black ills."'
What's irritating is not partic-
ularly what Ms. Southgate has
to say, but the reliance by Final
Call writers on the Jewish Press,
a Kahane-influence weekly that
few in the more mainstream Jew-
ish world take seriously.
* An account of a publicly
backed Los Angeles radio station,
KPFK, yielding to "Jewish pres-
sure" to cancel several Afro-cen-
tric programs. The moderator of
one of these shows told the Final
Call "that unrelenting pressure
by the Anti-Defamation League
... and neo-conservative activist
David Horowitz of the Los Ange-
les-based Center for the Study of
Popular Culture was the moti-
vating factor behind" canceling
the shows.
* A report that framed efforts
by Baltimore's Northwest Citi-
zens' Patrol to replace a black dis-
trict commander with a Jew as
reflecting efforts by local Jews to
preserve the disproportionate use
of "police manpower to protect
Jewish property... A computer
system [used by the Northwest
Citizens' Patrol] allegedly was
used to forward information to
judges allowing for stiffer penal-
ties for crimes against Jewish
property and people."
* A column by James Strong
that calls "racist" a recent Amer-
ican Jewish Committee study
that concluded that blacks are
more likely than whites to ex-
press anti-Semitic sentiments.
Mr. Strong condemned such polls
because they "do not distinguish
black anti-racism from repulsive
anti-Semitism.... Since 95 percent
of the Jews blacks encounter are
white, blacks consider Jews white
first and Jewish second.... If they
were truly interested in obtain-
ing accurate information about
blacks and anti-Semitism, they
would also poll black attitudes to-
ward black Jews, Arabic Jews

and other non-white Jews. If they
did, they would probably find that
97 percent of blacks have a fa-
vorable attitude toward black
Jews and nearly the same toward
other non-white Jews...."

Is Sharpton
Jewish?

A thought that has crossed per-
haps one mind in the entire uni-
verse: Does Al Sharpton, the
black Democratic senatorial can-
didate in New York state, have a
"streak" ofJewishness in him?
New York Daily News colum-
nist Jim Sleeper writes in the re-
cent New Republic, 'In December
... [Mr. Sharpton] was the warm-
up act for Louis Farrakhan at the
Jacob Javits Convention Center
in Manhattan ... In January came
his noises about a third party. In
February he announced his De-
mocratic primary campaign, in-
voking Farrakhan along with
Martin Luther King Jr. At lunch
with Sharpton recently, I sug-
gested playfully that he even has
a streak of Jewish liberalism. I
agree,' he said solemnly."

Will Rabbis
Go To Jail?

Leave it to William F. Buckley Jr.
to find a good gag line in Ameri-
ca's search for safety from ram-
paging crime. Referring to a
Supreme Court ruling that a
Rhode Island rabbi had uncon-
stitutionally conferred a bene-
diction on a high school
graduating class, Mr. Buckley
wrote in his nationally syndicat-
ed column on Monday, "If you
haven't read the very latest ver-
sion of the crime bill, you will
need to speculate whether if he
prays three times over the stu-
dents, he will go to jail for life."
The quip appeared while lam-
basting what Mr. Buckley sees
as efforts by the American Civil
Liberties Union and Alan Der-
showitz to erect "a rigid wall" be-
tween church and state. At a
recent New York University law
school symposium on church-
state relations, Mr. Dershowitz
— Harvard law professor and de-
fender of celebrity clients (e.g.,
O.J. Simpson, Mike Tyson, Claus
von Bulow) — noted that if he
had been on the scene, he would
have arrested Abraham the mo-
ment he raised his sword against
Isaac.
"Ah," an audience member ob-
served, "but then you would have
defended Abraham, right?"
"Right," said Mr. Dershowitz.
According to Mr. Buckley, the
lawyer "smiled. Everyone else
laughed." [11
