M- Sat 10 - 5 Hr Palestinian Police Arrest Suspects Tel Aviv (JTA) — In the wake of a drive-by fatal shooting of an Israeli soldier this week, Pales- tinian police, acting on the direct orders of Yassir Arafat, detained over 50 members of the Islamic Jihad opposition group in the past few days. Israeli security officials praised Arafat and the Palestinian police for cracking down on the terror- ists. In one incident, for which Islamic Jihad claimed responsi- bility, Victor Shichman, an IDF soldier, was killed and two others were wounded. The crackdown also followed the stabbing of two Jews in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City on the eve of Rosh Hashanah. The stabbings prompted Brig. Gen. Yigal Pressler, the prime minister's adviser on terrorism, to issue a general advisory to Israelis and Jews around the world to be on special alert dur- ing the High Holiday period. An Israeli Southern Command source described the PLO crack- down as a "step in the right direction as far as Palestinian Authority's policy against terror is concerned." But, the source added, "con- sistency and time will eventually judge its effectiveness." Meanwhile, the Palestinian po- lice released 10 members of the fundamentalist group after ques- tioning them. Palestinian opposition groups, from both the left and from the religious fundamentalists, issued An Israeli Southern Command source described the PLO crackdown as a step in the right direction. protest leaflets in the wake of the crackdown, accusing the Pales- tinian Authority of acting "like the Israeli occupation." Israeli security sources said that it is easier for Mr. Arafat to crack down on the Islamic Jihad group, which is smaller and gen- erally considered less dangerous than the Hamas movement. It is harder for Arafat to crack down on Hamas, according to observers, because he hopes to eventually win the group's sup- port for his local autonomy projects in the West Bank as a whole, as well as in Gaza and Jericho.
