Police Kill
Car Thieves

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Following an
extensive car chase, Israeli police
shot and killed two Arab car
thieves from the Samaria district
of the West Bank.
The thieves were apparently
members of a gang long involved
in stealing cars, disassembling
them in the territories and re-
selling them as spare parts in Is-
rael.
Some of the cars stolen by the
gang in the past are known to
have been used as car bombs or
as vehicles for use in drive-by ter-
rorist attacks.
Police had concentrated their
efforts in tracking down the gang
in the Hadera and Pardes Han-
na region of the coastal plane,
where many car thefts had been
reported lately. In a rash of inci-
dents, thieves were breaking into
houses at night, stealing car keys
and valuables and getting away
in the stolen cars.
One of the two thieves killed
yesterday was wanted by police
in connection with burglaries and
car thefts, and had been banned
from entry into Israel. He was
identified as Salah Mahadawi,
20, of the village of Shweikeh,
near the West Bank town of
Nablus.
The other suspect killed in the
incident was Sakr Kapani, 24, of
Nazaleh Sharkiyeh, near Tulka-
rm. A third man was detained.

Consulate Opens
In Shanghai

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's Con-
sulate General in Shanghai was
officially opened in the Chinese
commercial and business capital,
when the Foreign Ministry's
Moshe Ram presented his cre-
dentials as Consul General to a
representative of the Chinese
Foreign Ministry.
The Shanghai representation
is the first official Israeli office in
China apart from the embassy in
Beijing.
Up to the time of the Japanese
occupation of China during World
War II, Shanghai was the site of
a sizeable wealthy Jewish colony,
established by Jews fleeing Rus-
sia and, in the 1930s, Jews flee-
ing the Nazis.
Afer World War II, most Jews
left Shanghai.
The renewal of a Jewish com-
munity only began again with the
opening of diplomatic relations
between Israel and China in Jan-
uary 1992 and the arrival of Is-
raeli and world Jewish
commercial and merchant rep-
resentatives seeking to take part
in the new Chinese open-door
and joint-venture policies.
