Instruction has been established
in the humanities building on the
Mount Scopus campus.
The center, headed by Profes-
sor Nava Ben-Zvi, is a collabora-
tive effort of the university and
Yeda Computers, which is the Is-
raeli representative of Apple
Computers.
The Rashi Foundation assist-
ed by donating $250,000 for the
latest hardware. The center's staff
consists of 10 mostly part-time,
untenured staffers — experts in
sociology, communications, edu-
cation, computers and other dis-
ciplines.
"I've been interested for many
years in the use of computers for
teaching the layman," says Pro-
fessor Ben-Zvi, who is by training
a chemist. "The use of nontextu-
al media for education fascinates
me."
A few years ago, the then-pres-
ident of the university, Professor
Yoram Ben-Porath, approached
Professor Ben-Zvi and asked her
to involve the Hebrew Universi-
ty in new teaching technologies.
The new center is working with
university departments on all
four campuses in Jerusalem and
Rehovot on the potential uses of
multimedia in their studies and
the programs they will need.
"We are involved with all units,
even the libraries and the lan-
guage labs," says Professor Ben-
Zvi. "And we are now building a
branch of the multimedia center
on the Givat Ram campus in ad-
dition to the headquarters on
Mount Scopus. We are also in reg-
ular contact with the Jerusalem
Education Authority and want to
introduce multimedia in schools
as well."
The connection with Yeda and
Apple came about because Pro-
fessor Ben-Zvi has worked on a
Macintosh computer for years.
"I thought it was natural to ap-
proach Apple's representatives in
Israel to see if they were inter-
ested in working together on the
project. They were very eager, but
we will not include only Apple
hardware or software in the cen-
ter," says Professor Ben-Zvi.
The center was a natural for
Apple because Macintosh was
chosen this year by the Israel Ed-
ucation Ministry as the most suit-
able tool for teaching and creating
multimedia.
"Our main aim is to create a
comprehensive compendium of
multimedia and programs for
training, especially teachers,"
says Dr. Yoram Friedman, Yeda
Computers' general manager.
"Since the Eighties, Apple has
been the flag-bearer in this field
... (which) has grown tremen-
dously in recent years here and
abroad.
`The sky is the limit. The time
has come for dedicating ... (re-
sources) to a serious and acade-
mic study of the wonderful world
of multimedia." ❑
