cation. They sent David and Eu-
gene to United Hebrew Schools
and the Vereinigte Mittelschule,
which offered a Yiddish curricu-
lum. During the summer, the
young Mr. Mondry attended Far-
band Camp and Kinderwelt, a
summer outpost in Chelsea.
"It wasn't only a sports and
athletic camp. It was a place
where Yiddish cultural events,
plays and songs, were part of the
activities," he remembers.
Mr. Mondry met his wife at
that camp. They were both 14.
Five years later, Miriam and he
married. It was 1943. Mr.
Mondry left his studies at the
University of Michigan to earn a
living.
Later in life, he led a mission
of Jews to Israel and Nazi con-
centration camps in Poland. He
became active with Federation's

Allied Jewish Campaign, and
from there, took on other re-
sponsibilities.
He served on the Federation
Board of Governors and the
boards of the Jewish Home for
Aged, Sinai Hospital and the De-
troit Service Group. In 1980, he
co-chaired the Allied Jewish
Campaign with Marvin Gold-
man.
Mr. Goldman, still a friend, de-
scribes Mr. Mondry as "a quiet
man, shunning publicity and ac-
colades, but always there when
called upon. He's a man with a
heart of gold, who, by his enthu-
siastic giving— both financially
and personally — sets an exam-
ple for all of us."
Mr. Mondry's leadership in
the first Operation Exodus Cam-
paign was one of his most no-
table contributions to the Jewish
community, locally and world-
wide. In five years, Exodus raised
$30 million dollars locally to res-
cue Jews from the former Soviet
Union and resettle them in Is-
rael.
"In his heart and in his ac-
tions, David Mondry is as com-
mitted a Jew as there is in this
Jewish community," said Feder-
ation President David Page.
"David Mondry is not a commit-
tee person. Action is his strong
suit." El
