The Neighborhood Project and
the Jewish Community Center
will hold their first All-American
Basketball Clinic from 5:30-8
p.m. Sept. 22 at the JCC's Jim-
my Prentis Morris Building
(JPM) in Oak Park.
The clinic is for youths in
kindergarten through sixth
grade. Kids will work on drib-
bling, passing and shooting and
there will be scrimmages.
A free sports card show, fea-
turing experts who will answer
card questions, will be held from
6-8 p.m. and a pizza dinner will
be served at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets for Detroit Pistons
games at the Palace will be
awarded in a drawing.

Karate Center
Dedication Set

The American Taekwondo Asso-
ciation (ATA) and the Sports
Club of West Bloomfield will ded-
icate the first Karate for Kids cen-
ter in southeastern Michigan,
located at the Sports Club, from
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 24.
The dedication will feature
demonstrations by class mem-
bers of Karate for Kids (ages 5-
14) and ATA Taekwondo
(teenagers and adults).
Timothy Holcomb, a third-de-
gree black belt, is the center's
owner and chief instructor.

A Tal Order

Freshman goalie Amir Tal from
Tel Aviv helped the Oakland Uni-
versity soccer team get its season
off on the right foot.
Tal made two saves and came
out of his net to grab or deflect
several crosses as the Pioneers
blanked host Detroit Mercy 2-0
on Sept. 3.
The 21-year-old Tal became
the first goalie other than Mike
Sheehy to start a game for Oak-
land since 1989. Sheehy started
every Pioneers match during his
four-year career at the Rochester
school.
