Americans for Peace Now (APN)
plans to use next week's one-year
anniversary of the Israeli-PLO
Declaration of Principles as the
kickoff for a new congressional
push in support of the Middle
East peace process. This is part-
ly in response to recent criticism
that groups supporting the poli-
cies of the Israeli government
have forfeited Capitol Hill to the
The new APN thrust is de-
signed to balance efforts of such
groups as the Zionist Organiza-
tion of America and the Center
for Security Policy, as well as sev-
eral leading Likud politicians
who have been active on Capi-
tol Hill in recent months.
When Congress returns, the
House will hold a special session
on the peace process. Sen. Patrick
Leahy, D-Vt., is putting together
a congressional letter backing re-
cent developments in the peace
APN is also compiling a con-
gressional briefing book designed
to underline the point that too
much congressional meddling
