Mr. Haddad says the Israelis have agreed to the Palestinians' demand for a monetary authori- ty. The implementation, he said, needs to be discussed in the Is raeli-Palestinian joint economic committee. A monetary authority would have the same functions as a cen- tral bank — but that doesn't mean the Palestinians will de- mand their own currency at this time, Mr. Haddad says. The issue of a Palestinian cur- rency hasn't yet been agreed upon. It will be discussed with the Israelis in the joint econom- ic committee, Mr. Haddad says, admitting that the Palestinians cannot yet support their own cur- rency. But, Mr. Haddad stresses, they insist on their right to issue a cur- rency whenever they feel they have enough reserves. Jordan, he recalls, also began with a monetary authority and no currency.
