THE ENTERTAINMENT EVENT OF THE YEAR the holidays with a personal list of changes and improvements they need to make. He said it is important to slow one's life down during Elul while putting one's personal list together. At Yom Kippur, the list is reviewed and decisions are made for change. "Yom Kippur is a death day," said Rabbi Sleutelberg. "Elul is when we slow down. We stop eat- ing and drinking on Yom Kippur. We look for forgiveness on this day. But the beauty is we get to be reborn. The placement of Sukkot and Simchat Torah are so perfect. These holidays bring us back to life in a robust fash- ion." For Rabbi David Nelson of Beth Shalom, Yom Kippur is a time of reorientation. "The shofar," he said, "is the key moment. People are very ner- vous and almost agitated. They may have been noisy up to that point, but then they are strange- ly quiet. Repentance has a lot to do with examining one's deeds and deciding what direction to take in the new year. The concept of who shall live and who shall die is very frightening." Should children repent? Two local educators agree that re- pentance can be learned at al- most any age. "Repentance is a mechanism for reconciliation," said Harlene Appelman, director of educational services for the Agency for Jew- Repentance leads to rebirth. ish Education. "Children need to learn that this is an opportuni- ty that is built into the calendar. It's a great opportunity for chil- dren to apologize to their parents, and for parents to apologize to their kids and their own parents. "Children need to understand that they have to fix things, they need to get forgiveness to do so." "For your kids to say `I'm sorry' is important," said Sue Stettner, director of Jewish Experiences For Families (JEFF). "Under- standing that we aren't perfect and saying, 'I realize I did some- thing wrong,' and 'I didn't mean to hurt your feelings' is really im- portant." Repentance, according to Rab- bi Silberberg, is a genuine feel- ing of submission and humility. When a person feels heartbroken, repentance should bring about feelings of a mended heart and a new confidence. "After we repent is a time that can be the happiest of the year," said Rabbi Silberberg. "Yom Kip- pur gives you a time to start your life all over again. Most people don't want to be honest with themselves. But here is a chance to be, a wonderful chance."ll BALFOUR 61 ANNUAL CELEBRATION THURSDAY • SEPT. 22, 1994 • 7:30 PM • FOX THEATRE HONORING IRVING LAKER Recipient of ZOA'S PRESTIGIOUS JUSTICE LOUIS D.
