He was 74. The biographer included among his works the 1984 bi- ography of Czech Jewish writer Franz Kafka, The Nightmare of Reason, which won several prizes and was translated into 10 languages. He researched the book in Czechoslovakia, Germany and Israel. Mr. Pawel also wrote The Labyrinth of Exile, a biography of Zionism founder Theodor Herzl. He recently completed a book about German Jewish poet Heinrich Heine, and at the time of his death was working on his memoirs, titled Life In The Robert H. Mr. Leet served many years as a scout master in Detroit, an auxiliary policeman for the cities of Oak Park and Southfield, and served on the Boys Town volunteer fire department in Omaha. He vol- unteered with the Cystic Fibro- sis Foundation both in Michigan and Florida. He was retired from the Army Corps of Engineers. The founder and owner of King Midas Real Estate, Mr. Lutchan- sky was a member of the board of directors of the San Diego Board of Realtors from 1970- 1975. He was chosen as a real es- tate legal arbitrator by the San Diego judicial system, and he also taught real estate ethics and law for San Diego's continuing adult education program. He retired from real estate in the late 1980s. Mr. Lutchansky moved to San Diego in 1966 after selling a meat wholesaling business he founded in Detroit's Eastern Market. The business grew into Herman Lutchansky's Wholesale Meat Company. Mr. Lutchansky was a deco- rated fire controller in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was also a 32nd degree Mason. He was an ace table tennis player and held the Detroit champion- ship for several years. He was married for 44 years to Betsy Lutchansky, who died in 1988. He is survived by his sec- ond wife, Joan Lutchansky of San Diego; children, Miriam Glass- man of San Diego; Michael of Los Angeles, Dan of San Diego; Ed of St. Louis, Robin of San Jose, Calif.; step-children, Cindee Douglas of Murrietta, Calif.; Rick Sands of San Rafael, Calif.; Julie Sands of San Diego; four grand- children, Sarah, Rachel, David and Amy.
