KEREN KAYEMETH LEISRAEt
by Eli Scherr
A
t this season of the year, we reflect on both the past and the future. At JNF we can be thankful that the past has
been filled with accomplishment and the future with challenge.
In the past, we lobbied, demonstrated and prayed for freedom for our fellow Jews in the former Soviet
Union, Ethiopia and other parts of the world. Our prayers have been answered and hundreds of thousands of our
brothers and sisters are free in the Land of Israel. The future challenges us to help these people achieve a better life.
In the past, we have worked, prayed and hoped for peace in Israel and the Mideast and the possibility of peace ap-
pears stronger now than it has for many years. The future challenges will be achieved only if all parties deal from the strength of a desire
for peace rather than from the weakness of having to submit to an imposed peace.
The Jewish National Fund continues to make progress providing those things which improve life for all the people of Israel. JNF has
touched the lives of tens of thousands of Israelis, providing them with housing sites, recreation centers, jobs, summer camps and water.
By supporting the Jewish National Fund, you help Israel to remain a strong and determined partner for peace in the Mideast. Your sup-
port has been vital to our past accomplishments and will remain vital if we are to meet the challenges of the future.
The themes and messages of the Days of Awe are many. I would like to take this opportunity to share one such message with you. The
accompanying article by Milton S. Shapiro, National President of the Jewish National Fund, is addressed to all friends and supporters of
JNF. His message reminds us that as we reflect on the hopes and blessings of the past, we must never forget the obligations and chal-
lenges of the future.
On a personal note, all of us at the Jewish National Fund join in extending best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year to all. We
pray for a year of success, progress and peace for our people in Israel and throughout the world.
A Rosh Hashanah Message
by Milton 5. Shapiro, President, Jewish National Fund of America
A
nother High Holiday season, another handshake, another surge of hope.
Through the centuries, hope has been essential to the survival of the Jewish people. The Israeli national anthem is named
"Hatikvah - The Hope" — because the State of Israel is the triumph of a dream that was realized because we as a people never
lost hope.
`The Hope" continues. Mindful of the obstacles, we envision a future for which all Jews have yearned, a future of peace and coopera-
tion between Israel and her neighbors.
For JNF, hope accelerates the practical steps that bring the visionary goal withing reach.
Water is a key factor in any regional peace settlement. JNF is securing existing supplies and developing new sources of this precious
resource.
Economic prosperity is a prerequisite for a stable and progressive society. JNF is creating jobs for new immigrants and the unem-
ployed and bolstering Israel's tourist industry through the development of recreational and historic sites.
Regional development is crucial to the security of Israel's underpopulated areas. JNF road-building allows residents of isolated vil-
lages to reach urban centers and sources of employment. JNF cultivation of desert land fulfills Ben Gurion's vision of a thriving popula-
tion in the Negev.
In this season of reaffirmation, we must intensify our support of our spiritual homeland. Israel's best future is one of peace; its best
guarantee of that future is the strength, progress and security of its land and people. Those goals have always been JNF's mandate. And
this mandate, based on the biblical and historic imperative of geulat ha'aretz — redemption of the land — is carried out steadfastly, on
behalf of all Jewish people everywhere.
We send all our friends throughout the Jewish community Rosh Hashanah wishes of peace, health, and all the blessings of life.

memorializing_ Joseph Apple-
baum, late husband of Minnie
Raizel and father of Eugene and
Leonard Applebaum. Mr. Apple-
baum lived in Southfield. In es-
tablishing the Forest, Eugene

no better way to memorialise Dad
than with a living tribute. We know
that there will be 10,000 trees in
