part in this year's Games on Aug.

unteers. Some 230 people at-
tended the dinner dance.
Volunteers say their work on
the Games is rewarding not only
because of the smiles on the faces
of the athletes, but because they
feel they're contributing to the
quality of life in the Detroit Jew-

"With Rosh Hashanah comes

the best you've ever had," said
Games co-chairman Mike Ap-

Steve Stein

teve Stein has been a
member of The Jewish
News editorial staff since
February, but he's been in the
journalism business nearly all
his life.
A native Detroiter, Stein
wrote for the school newspapers
at Southfield-Lathrup High
School (Class of 1971) and
Michigan State University
(Class of 1975) before beginning
his professional career with the
Daily Tribune in Royal Oak in
June 1975.
Stein left the Tribune in April
1991 after working his way up
the ladder from city desk copy
editor to sports writer to sports
editor to executive sports editor.
In the latter role, he directed
sports coverage for the Triburze,
its sister paper the Macomb
Daily in Mount Clemens and
the newspapers' combined Sub-
urban Sunday edition.
Stein joined the Quarton
Group custom publishing com-
pany in Troy in October 1991
and left in January 1994. At
Quarton, he was a copy editor
and staff writer for several pub-
lications and editor of the De-
troit Red Wings' game program
for the 1992-93 season.
The winner of several awards
for both writing and communi-
ty service, Stein, 40, primarily
covers the business and sports
beats for The Jewish News.
He recently returned from a
six-day marathon covering the

North American Maccabi Youth
