people and remember the Jewish
past."
What concerns Rabbi Groner
are the vast numbers of Jews
who according to the 1990 Jew-
ish Population Survey indicated
that they do not belong to any
temple or synagogue.

don't enter a synagogue during
the High Holidays," he said.
"They are that far removed from
Jewish life that Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur does not even
stir them."
Rabbi David Nelson of Beth
Shalom said that other services
are also frequented and the idea
that High Holiday services are
better attended "is nothing more
than on old stereotype."
"Even the people who jokingly
say I'll see you next year at Rosh
Hashanah, I see them more than
three times a year."
Rabbi Elliot Pachter of B'nai
Moshe knows he is going to see
people he does not normally see
during the year. "We've come to
accept this," he said. "We don't
advocate it but we accept it. Peo-
ple who may not normally attend
services have a sense of need to
be there on Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur.' If that's what peo-
ple are going to do, it still gives
us an opportunity to open our
door and maybe next year they'll
come to services four times in-
stead of three."
So why are Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur services so well
attended?
Rabbi Groner and Rabbi
Pachter said the High Holidays
have the elements of judgment
and repentance to bring in a high-
er number of participants.
"The High Holidays are days
of judgment in which we are on
trial," Rabbi Groner said. "We
seek to be inscribed in the Book
of Life; therefore attendance is of
supreme importance."
Rabbi Pachter estimates that
20 percent of his congregation
attends Shabbat services on a
regular basis. High Holiday
attendance,
he said, is 100 per-
