Anna Shoychat

Anna Shoychat is fulfilling a life-
long goal to help humanity.
Trained as a physician in her na-
tive Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Dr.
Shoychat now is a high school sci-
ence teacher in the Galilee. "Af-
ter all, teaching, like medicine, is
about helping and caring for peo-
ple," said the 30-year-old immi-
grant.
Dr. Shoychat is one of 45 new-
corners from the former Soviet
Union who are radically improv-
ing educational standards in Is-
rael's north through the efforts of
the Jewish Agency for Israel, a
major recipient of funds raised
through contributions to detroit's
allied Jewish Campaign and Op-
erations Exodus.
"As a doctor, I never thought
I'd have to go to the community
for help. But when our lives were
threatened, we knew we had to
leave," said the wife and mother
of two young children. "I'm glad
I can now help others."
The Shoychat family came to
Israel in 1990 after more than 50
members of the Turkish minor-
ity were massacred and their
lives were threatened. "We re-
ceived a note stating boldly that
the Turks had been first and the
Jews would be next," she re-
called. "Within a month, we were
on the plane to Israel."
After the family settled in
Kiryat Shemona, Dr. Shoychat's
husband, an engineer, was able
to find a job in his field. "But I
had to practical. There are too
many doctors in Israel and not
enough work," she said.
She enrolled in a program at
the Jewish Agency's "Operation
Opportunity," which is run
through the Tel Hai College in
the Upper Galilee The program
was designed to create employ-
ment opportunities for new im-
migrants.
Afterward, Dr. Shoychat found
a job as a biology and chemistry
teacher. She also is a researcher
at the nearby Migal Technology
Centers, where she works with
other new ; iArnigrants. The pro-
ject also is funded by Operation
