Rabbi Polish

The group, called the Israel
Policy Forum, distributed the 48-
page book, Mip'nei Dar'khei
Shalom: For the Sake of Peace,
to nearly every American and
Canadian rabbi — more than
4,000 — conducting services over
the Jewish New Year.
"This really is a very historic
set of High Holidays," Rabbi Pol-
ish said. "The State of Israel is
moving forward on a difficult
process with the PLO. It is at
peace with its neighbor to the
south, it is at peace with its neigh-
bor to the east. We haven't had a
moment like that before — and
it's working on peace with Syria."
The resource book lists facts
on the benefits of peace, quotes
from Jewish sources and articles
discussing halachic arguments
related to the peace process. It
opens with a quote from Mr. Ra-
bin and contains a sample ser-
mon from Knesset Committee on
Education and Culture Chair-
man Avraham Burg.
"I regard (the peace process) as
one of the great historic moments,"
Rabbi Polish said. "It deserves to
be celebrated and supported. This
(book) represents a kind of unified
commitment — of Reform and Or-
thodox rabbis — all across the po-
litical spectrum."
Contributors to the guide in-
clude Rav Ovadia Yosef, former
chief Sephardic rabbi of Israel
and spiritual leader of the Shas
political party; Rav Yehuda Ami-
tal, Orthodox leader of Har Et-
zion Yeshiva; and Rabbi Ammiel
Hirsch, executive director of the
Association of Reform Zionists of
America.
Rabbi Polish, who's been in-
volved in the project since it be-
gan over a year ago, says he's
pleased with the result.
"We started before last
Shavuot," he said. "It's been a big
undertaking." II

Dr. Sidney Bolkosky's Com-
munity Views column of Aug.
26 meant to indicate that the
Spielberg Project interviews
would be 2 3 hours each, not 30
minutes.
