university as an immediate con-
tinuation of his high school edu-
cation, when all that he has
learned is still fresh in his mind.
It's much more difficult to get back
to systematic study after a three
year break in the army.
If he pleads that he would love
to attend university, but because
of family economic circumstances
cannot afford to do so, the IDF will
provide him with scholarships,
which he can repay by adding a
few extra years in uniform.
Further, his army service will
be in the field which he has stud-
ied, be it engineering, computers,
economics, even law. True, he will
be called upon to add some extra
time in service, but he will be an
officer and will be receiving in-
valuable professional experience
which will stand him in good stead
when he eventually goes back to
civilian life.
From the point of view of the
IDF, they need academically
trained personnel in many fields,
and if they had to engage them as
civilians the cost would be very
great. This way, instead of wast-
ing potential talent on rookie ri-
flemen, they can train their own
scientific and engineering man-
power. It should be added that
women, too, serve successfully in
the academic reserve.
It's not an easy program. For
one thing, the young people go
through their basic military train-
ing during summer vacations and
in intervals between semesters.
Some refuse to accept the post-
ponement, and prefer to get their
army duty over with as soon as
possible.
As indicated, the expectation is
that the period of compulsory ser-
vice will be in the profession for
which they get their university
training. A few years ago, how-
ever, the IDF began siphoning off
a percentage of the college gradu-
ates when they got into uniform,
and sent them to field units as
officers. The purpose was to help
elevate the level of officers in com-
bat units. Since this was contrary
to what they had expected, and
what had been the policy previ-
ously, 37 of the graduates orga-
nized and applied to Israel's High
Court of Justice, demanding that
the IDF keep its promise to use
them professionally.
The court ruled against them.
There had never been explicit
pledge with respect to the nature
of their duties after graduation.
Policy since then has been lenient,
and in some cases the service is
split between field and profes-
sional assignments.
In a recent issue of Bama-
haneh, the IDF weekly magazine,
several of the reservists were in-
terviewed and gave their age
group, and their social life suf-
fered. As 18-year-old freshmen
they were in the company of stu-
dents most of whom, boys and
girls alike, had already complet-
ed their army service.
