is working as a research assis-
tant in an Israeli hospital and
with the Ministry of Health in the
maternal/child health division.
"I'm nervous," said Ms. Barr
about her decision to make
aliyah. "I'll be disappointed be-
cause it is easy to idealize Israel
when you are not living there. I
carry a lot of idealism with me.
I'm scared I'll be disappointed but
Fm hoping that won't happen. Fm
keeping my options open. I know
I can always come back but I'm
going to give it a fair chance."
One of the things Ms. Barr
said she would miss most about
leaving home is her comfort lev-
el with the language.
"When I read an English news-
paper, I can look at the headlines
and I don't have to read to un-
derstand what they say," she
said. `This won't be the case with
Hebrew newspapers. Also, I'm
not going to know the inside jokes
Israelis have. I didn't have a lot
of their same experiences, like go-
ing to the army."
Both Mr. Zeff and Ms. Barr
said their friends and family were
supportive about their decisions
to make aliyah. They also agreed
knowing the language and tak-
ing time to make a decision were
helpful. 111

Senate Supports
JWV Stamp

New York (JTA) — The U.S. Sen-
ate has unanimously passed leg-
islation supporting the issuance
of a postage stamp commemo-
rating the centennial of the Jew-
ish War Veterans of America.
The legislation, known as S.R.
60, was approved on Aug. 12 and
calls on the postmaster general
to issue a stamp in 1996 honor-
ing JWV's 100 years of service to
The JWV, founded in 1896, is
the oldest active veterans orga-
nization in the United States.
The Senate bill was introduced
by Sen. Phil Gramm, R-Texas,
and was lobbied for by members
of the JWV and allied veteran or-
ganizations.
Edward Blatt, national com-
mander of the JWV, commended
Mr. Gramm's efforts.
"JWV is thankful to Senator
Gramm for his support in this
campaign," said Mr. Blatt. "His
leadership in the Senate made
passage of S.R. 60 possible."
The House of Representatives
is in the process of passing its
own version of the stamp legis-
lation.
"We hope the House of Repre-
sentatives joins with the Senate
in recognizing JWV's contribu-
tions to America's safety and the
perpetuation of its democracy,"
said sponsor Rep. James Talent,
R-Mo.
