Best Wishes
For A
Healthy, Happy
New Year

Carol Kaczander

and Ms. Kaczander hope that
many more will get out the mes-
sage this year.
Packets going to rabbis in-
clude sources, blessings and
quotes to use in sermons and oth-
er activities. Mishnah Brachot,
the tractate on blessings, for ex-
ample, says, "One who sees a
person who is blind or lame, or
who is covered with sores . . . re-
cites the blessing, 'Blessed are
You, Lord our God, King of the
Universe, who is a righteous
judge.' But if they were born that
way (with a disability), one says,
". . who makes us different."
"Our goal is to increase the
sensitivity of the community,"
Ms. Kaczander says. "There are
Jews with disabilities. They don't
want to be isolated, they want to
be part of the community."
Ms. Kaczander and Ms. Tin-
man agree that not all disabili-
ties are visible, or physical.
Synagogue and school adminis-
trators need to be aware of all
kinds of disabilities and accom-
modate their organizations to
them.
'We're really talking about the
spectrum, from a child with
learning disabilities to someone
more physically disabled," Ms.
Kaczander says.
So how do the organizers ad-
vise people to act when meeting
someone with a disability?
"Just act natural," Ms. Tin-
man says. "Never be afraid to ask
questions, and don't feel you
have to stop children from ask-
ing."
"Just say 'hello,' " Ms. Kaczan-
der adds.
Ms. Tinman also is executive
director of Keshet, a support
group for families of children
with disabilities. They hold
monthly meetings on coping with
the holidays, grief and family is-
sues, sibling and marital issues
and financial planning.
Ms. Tinman and Ms. Kaczan-
der see some improvements in
the way people handle their dis-
abled peers.
"There is a definite, definite
change," Ms. Tinman says.
"I wouldn't say it's grand. Peo-
ple's eyes are slit open, not wide
open." 0
