The davening was so highly ir-
regular that people in the same
row found themselves bumping
into each other, and at one point,
the entire twelfth row fell over to
the right like a trail of dominoes.
Sometime in the middle of the
night, after chanting the Sh'nza
for the fourth- or fifth-thousandth
time, the synagogue grew quiet,
and in the little town of Chelm,
time itself stopped.
If anyone had been able to
walk through the village, they
would have found absolute si-
lence. No sound of playing, no
sound of praying, even the cows
and the chickens made no noise.
The streets of Chelm were as
hushed as the Quiet Man had
once been.
Did the people all fall asleep at
once or was it the end of all the
days? Was it the time of reckon-
ing? Had the New Year truly es-
caped?
Eternity, like a warm blanket,
tucked the village in tight.
Then. Something. A sound? A
noise?
On the bimah, Rabbi Kibbitz
stirred. In the congregation, Reb
Cohen nudged Reb Stein who
nudged Reb Gold, who thought
about going for coffee, but decid-

the shofar had reached the vil-
lage of Chelm all the way from
the town of Smyrna! Rabbi
Yonon Abrahms had captured
the New Year!

In an instant, the townspeople
were on their feet, dancing in the
aisles! The celebration continued
for at least 15 minutes, before
they all collapsed in exhaustion
and slept, happily.
The New Year had come at
last, and it visited the town of
Chelm regularly thereafter. Life
had returned to normal.
Several years later, about a
before Passover, the Quiet
Man had another thought. But
that is another story.
