"Taking photos under water
for research is not easy," said Mr.
Vago. "We must shoot exactly the
same angle and distance every
time." One of the most difficult
jobs was to drill holes for stain-
less steel rods in 150 rocks. The
biologists designed a system with
a plug on the rod that could be
attached to a device on the cam-
era. they also developed a new
method to make close-ups.So-
phisticated computer program-
ming was designed for the
calculations.
"The camera has definitely en-
hanced out ability to send out an
alarm when corals are in stress,"
said Professor Dubinsky. He and
his staff are recommending their

projects in Hawaii, Mexico, the

A magnificent new cultural cen-
ter for local and international
gatherings was recently complete
on the shores of the Sea of
Galilee. In the words of Israel's
Prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin,
the new center is "a house where
one can discuss and express dif-
ferences of opinion and look for-
ward to the future without
forgetting the past."
Gita Sherover, a well-known
figure in Jerusalem, is the dri-
ving force behind the new cul-
tural center, which she had built
in memory of her son, Gabriel.
"Gabriel possessed an infectious
love of dialogue," called D. Mc
Laughlin, president of the world-
renowned Aspen Institute, who
came to Israel's new internation-
al center together with 30 men
and women from all parts of the
world to participate in its first
symposium, cosponsored by the
Aspen Institute. It consisted of a
three-day discussion on the sub-
ject of "Democracy and Diversity."
"We at Aspen have spent more
than four decades discussing the
great issues of out times, and we
have witnessed much visionary
thinking. We hope this new cen-
ter will be a place for the promo-
of peace and good will to
people fioin all background ,,, -
