L'Shanah Tovah!

Literature prepared by the
joint Golan Settlement Commit-
tee reminds the visitor that Syr-
ia first attacked Israel from the
Golan in 1948, and thereafter vi-
olated the Armistice agreement
400 times, with a loss of 140 Is-
raeli lives. Quiet came only after
the Six-Day War when Israel, in
defense, moved in.
We are reminded that in the
1960s the Syrians began a seri-
ous project which sought to divert
the head water sources of the Ba-
nias, the Hatsbani and the Dan
Rivers, which flow into the Jor-
dan River, and thence into Is-
rael's main reservoir, the Sea of
Galilee. Only Israel's possession
of the area today prevents im-
plementation of that program,
which could deny Israel a third
of its water supply.
What does the future hold in
store for the Golan?

May the New Year Bring To All Our Friends,

Everything Good in Life.

Third prize work

sive work titled A Society of
Plants, while Kim Moon Kyu
from Korea won second prize
from his work.
A total of 80 tons of Galilean
marble from a nearby quarry
were commissioned for the event.
Of the 15 sculptors, seven were
Israelis and the others were from
Turkey, France, Mexico, South
Korea, Uzbedkistan, Italy, Ro-
mania, and the United States.
Ma'alot is located high in the
Galilean hills, two kilometers
from the Lebanese border. Es-
tablished in 1957, immigrants to
Israel from thirty countries have
settled here, together with native
Israelis. In 1963, Ma'alot and the
Arab village of Tarshiha, a kilo-
meter of the west, joined togeth-
er to form one municipality. The
arrangement with a joint local
council, has proven to be a suc-
cessful example of Jewish-Arab
Coexistence.
